Course Description: 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World

This course explores the diverse and dynamic landscape of contemporary literature from the Philippines and around the globe. Students will engage with a wide array of literary texts that reflect the rich tapestry of experiences, cultures, and perspectives of the 21st century. Course Summary

Quarter 1: 21st Century Philippine Literature from the Regions

Content Standards: Students will understand and appreciate the elements and contexts of 21st century Philippine literature from various regions.

Performance Standards: Students will demonstrate their understanding and appreciation of 21st century Philippine literature by:

1. Writing a close analysis and critical interpretation of a literary text in terms of form and theme, with a description of its context derived from research.
2. Adapting a text into other creative forms using multimedia.

Most Essential Learning Competencies:

• Identifying the geographic, linguistic, and ethnic dimensions of Philippine literary history from pre-colonial to contemporary times.
• Recognizing representative texts and authors from each region (e.g., engaging in oral history research focusing on key personalities from the students’ region/province/town).
• Comparing and contrasting various 21st century literary genres with earlier genres/periods, citing their elements, structures, and traditions.
• Discussing how different contexts enhance a text's meaning and enrich the reader's understanding.
• Producing a creative representation of a literary text by applying multimedia and ICT skills.
• Conducting self- and/or peer-assessment of the creative adaptation of a literary text, based on rationalized criteria, prior to presentation.

Content Standards: Students will understand and appreciate literary texts in various genres across national literatures and cultures.

Performance Standards: Students will demonstrate their understanding and appreciation of 21st century world literature by:

1. Writing a close analysis and critical interpretation of a literary text in terms of form and theme, with a description of its context derived from research.
2. Producing a critical paper that analyzes literary texts in relation to the context of the reader and the writer or interpreting literary texts using any of the critical approaches.
3. Adapting a text into other creative forms using multimedia.

• Identifying representative texts and authors from Asia, North America, Europe, Latin America, and Africa.
• Comparing and contrasting various 21st century literary genres and their elements, structures, and traditions from across the globe.
